David Tsai, MD, Physician

Dr. David Tsai is a hand and upper extremity surgeon with dual training in plastic & reconstructive surgery and orthopedics. Dr. Tsai applies expertise from both fields to provide the utmost specialty care for patients with upper extremity ailments from the simple and common to the incredibly rare and complex.

Dr. Tsai completed his undergraduate studies at New York University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude with Honors in Biology. He then went on to attend Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson for medical school, and spent a dedicated year performing translational research at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Tsai completed his plastic & reconstructive surgery residency training at Yale under the mentorship of Dr. John A. Persing. There, he learned the full spectrum of plastic surgery including pediatric craniofacial reconstruction, aesthetic surgery, microsurgery for limb salvage and oncologic reconstruction, brachial plexus reconstruction, peripheral nerve surgery, targeted muscle reinnervation, hand & upper extremity surgery, and melanoma surgery as part of Yale’s Melanoma Unit, founded and led by Dr. Stephan Ariyan.

Dr. Tsai went on to complete orthopedic fellowship training in hand, upper extremity, & microsurgery at St. Luke’s Mount Sinai C.V. Starr Hand Surgery Center (the former Roosevelt Hospital) under Dr. Michael Hausman. During his time there, Dr. Tsai acquired a wealth of knowledge in upper extremity care, mastering orthopedic principles and techniques for fracture management and reconstruction of the hand, wrist, proximal forearm, elbow, and humerus, including minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques.

Dr. Tsai has traveled extensively throughout his medical and surgical training, visiting world renown experts at numerous institutions including the Mayo Clinic, NYU Langone and Bellevue, Montefiore, the Buncke Clinic, and Curtis National Hand Center. He has published several peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters during his career, with focus on hand surgery, microsurgery, burn care, plastic surgery. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).
